Arndt defends UCI time trial crown

Emma Pooley and Wendy Houvenaghel both finished outside of the medal positions as Germany's Judith Arndt defended her time trial world title at the Road World Championship in Netherlands.
Pooley, the 2010 world champion, crossed the line second-fastest before being relegated to fourth place, while Houvenaghel - seeking redemption after missing out on a place in the British Olympic cycling team - finished 14th.
Riding third-last, Pooley came up just short in her effort to atone for a slow start to her 24.3 kilometres circuit, failing to overhaul American Evelyn Stevens' time.
It was to prove costly as Linda Melanie Villumsen of New Zealand edged the Briton into third before Arndt obliterated the field by over 30 seconds.
Days before her planned retirement from competitive cycling, the reigning Olympic silver medallist was ahead at every checkpoint en route to a time of 32 minutes 25 seconds, 33 seconds clear of Stevens.
