Former Australia coach Eddie Jones will not apply for the vacant role of performance director with the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

Jones has recently signed a new two-year contract with Japanese club side Suntory and as a result will not be putting his name forward for the newly-created position, formed in the wake of John Steele's wide-ranging restructuring of the RFU.

The ex-Saracens boss has backed the claims of Jake White for the job, having worked with the South African coach during the Springboks' march to the Rugby World Cup in 2007.

White has confirmed his interest in the post, with media speculation also linking former England boss Clive Woodward and USA Rugby chief Nigel Melville with the task of managing rugby at every level in the country.

"Jake has coached and won the Rugby World Cup and the Junior World Cup, so he understands how to win at the highest level and also how to develop talent," Jones told rugbyxv.co.za.

"As a high performance director you need to be able to put the structures in place to win and the structures to develop talent - no one is better qualified than Jake."
