Fly-half Toby Flood is reportedly set to be ruled out of England's opening Six Nations clash with Scotland due to a knee injury.

The Daily Mail reports that the 26-year-old Leicester playmaker could be out for up to six weeks after picking up a knock during the Tigers' 28-23 Aviva Premiership victory over Sale Sharks on Sunday.

Such a lay-off would rule Flood out of England's Championship showdown with the Scots at Murrayfield on February 4 and the date with Italy in Rome a week later. With Flood out injured and fellow Rugby World Cup fly-half Jonny Wilkinson now retired, Saracens duo Charlie Hodgson and Owen Farrell look well placed to fill the fly-half void if required.

Richard Cockerill, Leicester's director of rugby said: "Toby has had a bang on the knee and it's being treated. We'll just have to wait and see how it progresses."

Flood looked set to spearhead England's defence of the Six Nations title and a serious injury would hand interim head coach Stuart Lancaster another selection headache following the news that centre Manu Tuilagi will be sidelined for a further month as he struggles to recover from a hamstring injury.

Lock Louis Deacon is also out of the running for the early part of the Six Nations with a hamstring injury while second row Courtney Lawes is another facing a fitness battle. Lancaster will name his 32-man squad for the Six Nations on January 11.
