Profile

Ian Poulter has talent oozing out of every pore, but is in danger of being overshadowed by his larger-than-life profile.

Poulter is famed for the colourful outfits he wears on tour, which form part of his own fashion label, but the path to the professional ranks was a tough one for the man from Hitchin.

He took up a job in a local pro shop and was not able to devote as much time to his golf as he would have liked, before taking the plunge and turning professional in 1996. He picked up the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award in 2000 a year in which he won his first Tour title, the Italian Open.

Poulter has been a regular winner on tour and secured the WGC Accenture World Matchplay Championship, adding the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shenzhen in 2012 to become only the second European, alongside Darren Clarke, to win multiple World Golf Championship events.

Poulter had a fine year in 2008, coming second at the Open and hitting a famous hole in one at the Masters but he is yet to show his best form in the majors.

Instead, it is in Ryder Cup play that Poulter has produced his greatest golf. Having justified his selection as a wildcard in 2008 by winning four out of a possible five points, he made the 2010 team by right and again played a key part in the success at Celtic Manor.

A captain's pick for the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah, Poulter arrived as a pantomime villain and left a hero. The self-proclaimed 'Postman' delivered in style, sparking Europe's final-day fightback with his scintillating form over the course of the weekend.

Career high:
'Postman' Poulter's five birdies while playing alongside Rory McIlroy at the end of the second day at Medinah inspired Europe's unlikely Ryder Cup fightback, cementing his status as a Ryder Cup legend.

Career low:
It's tough to class a second place finish in a major as a career low, but he finished second to Padraig Harrington in the 2008 Open after leading at one stage on final day.

Quote:
"Don't get me wrong, I really respect every professional golfer, but I know I haven't played to my full potential and when that happens, it will be just me and Tiger."

Trivia:
Has his own clothing design, Ian Poulter Design, and is a huge fan of Arsenal. He chartered a jet to take him to the 2006 Champions League final, in order to get back to the Irish Open for his tee-off time on the Thursday morning.
