Poulter: Westwood will win a major

Ian Poulter insists Lee Westwood is "too good" not to break his major championship duck, despite his compatriot yet again missing out at Muirfield.

Having led after 54 holes at The Open, the 40-year-old let another golden chance at winning his first major slip through his hands.

Phil Mickelson finished three shots clear of Henrik Stenson with Westwood ending up tied for third with Poulter and Adam Scott as the American claimed his fifth career major to bounce back from his US Open heartbreak at Merion last month.

Westwood has made the top ten in ten of his last 16 majors, finishing runner-up twice and third on five occasions, but Poulter believes his Ryder Cup team-mate has what it takes to go the whole way.

"I think Phil is a few years older than Lee is so guys can still win in their 40s," Poulter told Sky Sports News.

"Lee has got plenty more years left. If he keeps putting himself in position he is going to be able to get his hands on one of them for sure. He is too good a player not to.

"Obviously the pressure is there so that every time he gets himself in position it is difficult because everyone wants him to win and he wants to win even more. There's a lot of pressure he puts on himself

"I am sure if he keeps working the way he is and keeps improving then I am sure it is going to come."
