Mark Cavendish was denied a third stage victory at this year's Tour de France after being pipped to the line by former team-mate Andre Greipel on Stage 10.

Greipel, a fierce critic of Cavendish, left HTC Colombia last year having never seen eye-to-eye with the Manxman, but the German had the last laugh as he outsprinted his rival to claim his maiden victory on the Tour.

After an early breakaway group were reeled in with 15 kilometres remaining, green jersey holder Philippe Gilbert threatened to extend his lead in the sprint standings when he attacked with four other riders in tow, but he too was swallowed up by the pack.

The rolling 158 kilometre course from Aurillac to Carmaux led to a mass finish, and Cavendish made his charge in the dying stages, but he was outmuscled by Greipel.

Movistar's Jose Rojas finished third, while Thomas Voeckler retained the yellow jersey. Fabian Cancellara, Robert Gesink and Levi Leipheimer were involved in an early crash but after a number of high-profile casualties over the weekend, all recovered to finish the stage.
