Roger Federer will not play in the Shanghai Masters next month after withdrawing from the event with "nagging injuries".

The world No. 3, who helped Switzerland secure a return to the Davis Cup World Group in Australia less than a week after his US Open semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic in New York, has decided to take a rest to recover from a hectic summer.

Having already secured his place at the year-end ATP World Tour Championships in London in November, Federer is expected to return to action at his home town tournament in Basel on October 31.

"After consulation with my team, I've unfortunately decided to pull out of the Shanghai Masters in order to take some necessary time to rest and recuperate after a long summer," Federer said. "I have some nagging injuries that I need to address and I look forward to returning to the tour as soon as possible.

"I have some very fond memories of Shanghai so I will miss this amazing tournament and all my loyal Chinese fans, but I look forward to returning to China next [autumn]."
