Colin Donald, the father of world No. 1 Luke Donald, died suddenly on Monday night, the player's management company IMG Golf revealed.

Additional details were not immediately available.

"Our deepest condolences are with Luke and Diane Donald and their family, after the passing of Luke's father. They are in the thoughts and prayers of the PGA Tour family," the PGA Tour said in a statement.

Donald was at home in Chicago this weekend with his wife, awaiting the birth of their second child. He did not play in last week's WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai.

Donald is attempting to become the first player in history to win both the PGA Tour's money list and the European Tour's Order of Merit.

On the European Tour's Race to Dubai, Donald holds a £1 million lead over Martin Kaymer, who won last week's WGC event. Neither Donald nor Kaymer are playing this week.

He is a frontrunner to win the PGA Tour's Player of the Year award, with two titles this season at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic.
