Injured Murray to learn lessons from rivals

Andy Murray has admitted he will take lessons from his main rivals in a bid to limit the chances of picking up injuries like the one that forced him to withdraw from the ATP World Tour Finals.

A groin problem picked up prior to his loss to David Ferrer on Monday prompted world No. 3 Murray to withdraw in a bid to ensure he is at 100% fitness for the Australian Open in January.

Murray has claimed it is the first time in his career that he has succumbed to a muscle problem and feels he may have paid the price for a heavy workload following the US Open.

"If you look at the other guys, Roger [Federer] and Novak [Djokovic] both took a large break after the US Open," Murray said. "Rafa [Nadal] took one after Asia.

"Maybe trying to get ready for Basel was too soon. That's something I probably need to learn from because I had played a lot of matches."

Murray ran through to the final of the Australian Open in January and is determined to be in peak form for a repeat bid.

"It might seem to you guys like it's a long time away," Murray said. "But the Australian Open is six, seven weeks away. I could mess up my preparation for that, for the beginning of the year. That off season is so important for me, and has been for the last few years of getting myself in shape. It's one of the few times when you can have an actual training block."
