Andy Murray's mother Judy will take charge of Great Britain's Fed Cup team after being appointed as captain by the Lawn Tennis Association.

Murray will lead the British team for the Euro/Africa Zone Group I competition in Israel on February 1-4. She replaces Nigel Sears, father of Murray's girlfriend Kim, who left the role to coach former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic.

"It is a huge honour for me to represent my country in this way, and the role presents a very exciting challenge, given the mix of talent, experience and determination we have in our top female players right now," Murray said.

"I'm also really looking forward to working with the LTA to develop a bigger and stronger female coaching workforce. I want to encourage more women to get involved in coaching at the highest level, and to personally support their development."

As part of her new role, Murray will act as a mentor for promising coaches who are navigating their way through the system. Previously, she worked as Scottish national coach for nine years and has more than 20 years experience in the field.

She takes on the post at a time when the expectation levels are high, given that Britain can boast three players inside the world's top 100: Elena Baltacha, Anne Keothavong and Heather Watson.

The LTA's head of men's and women's tennis, Leon Smith, said: "To have someone of Judy's standing in the sport in such a key role for us is going to be a huge asset as we look to support our best players and coaches, and begin to climb up the ladder in world tennis. I know the players and the rest of the team are really excited about this."
