Floyd Mayweather Jnr's proposed fight with Manny Pacquiao in May has been plunged into doubt after the American was jailed for 90 days on domestic violence charges.

Mayweather, undefeated and widely considered the best pound-for-pound fighter, pleaded guilty to reduced battery domestic violence and harassment charges before a Las Vegas judge.

The 34-year-old must report to jail on January 6 to begin his sentence, putting a potential clash against fellow welterweight Pacquiao - which had been earmarked for May 5 - in huge jeopardy.

Mayweather, who must also carry out 100 hours of community service, avoids trial on further allegations he was involved in domestic violence in September 2010 after striking a plea deal with prosecutors.
