Defending champion Ian Poulter crashed out of the World Match Play Championship in Spain with defeat to home favourite Alvaro Quiros as five Englishmen failed to reach the quarter-finals.

Poulter, widely regarded to be one of the world's best matchplay golfers, was in dominant form as he breezed through the group stages at Finca Cortesin, but bowed out to a 4&3 defeat to the big-hitting Spaniard.

Despite having five Englishmen in action in the last-16 stage, there will be no English interest in the quarter-finals after Justin Rose was swept aside 4&3 by Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts.

Robert Rock lost 3&2 to Retief Goosen while Richard Finch was beaten by the same scoreline by Graeme McDowell. McDowell will meet Sergio Garcia in an intriguing quarter-final match-up after the Spaniard saw off English youngster Tom Lewis 4&3.

Goosen will meet Scotland's Paul Lawrie who strolled past Thomas Bjorn 5&4, while Quiros will face compatriot Rafael Cabrera-Bello who claimed a narrow win over Robert Karlsson.
