Montgomerie would accept Ryder Cup captaincy

Colin Montgomerie has confirmed he would accept the job of Ryder Cup captain if offered the chance to lead Europe for a second time next year.

Montgomerie led the European team to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010 and his successor Jose Maria Olazabal defended the title at Medinah in a dramatic 2012 encounter.

It was widely expected that Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke would battle it out for the right to take over from Olazabal, but Montgomerie's name has increasingly entered the frame since the US team named Tom Watson as their leader.

Clarke himself believes it would be a good idea to bring back a former captain to use his experience against five-time Open champion Watson, and Montgomerie confirmed he would accept the challenge if voted in.

"I've always said that we need the best man for the job, whoever that is," Montgomerie said ahead of the Volvo Champions tournament, which starts Thursday.

"And if we're going for the best man for the job then that doesn't say you shouldn't do it again.

"I thought it was between Darren and Paul until Darren said something, then my name was mentioned.

"I've never canvassed, as I didn't last time. I've not spoken to anybody about this. But I've always felt that if I was asked I would do it and that's still the case."
