Speculation surrounding Wayne Rooney's future has heightened after the unsettled striker was left out of Manchester United's squad for their pre-season friendly against AIK Stockholm on Tuesday.

David Moyes had insisted the match would see Rooney make his return to first-team action, with the 27-year-old completing 45 minutes against Real Betis behind closed doors at Carrington on Saturday.

However United say Rooney picked up a shoulder injury in a fall against Betis and will therefore play no part in Sweden.

Moyes said: "Wayne hurt his shoulder in a fall during a match on Saturday. It's not too serious and I don't expect it to keep him out for too long.

"I'm disappointed he's missing the game because we were keen to get him back involved and ready to play."

Rooney has been the subject of a second bid of £30 million from Chelsea, with United rejecting the offer swiftly and Moyes maintaining the striker is going nowhere.

A club spokesman said on Monday: "A bid was received yesterday and immediately rejected. Our position remains that he is not for sale."

It is the second injury Rooney has suffered in pre-season, after having to fly home from Thailand on United's tour with a hamstring problem.

Ahead of United's Community Shield clash with Wigan on Sunday, Rooney will not have played a single minute of any of the club's official pre-season games.

United squad to play AIK: Anders Lindegaard, Ben Amos, Rafael, Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Patrice Evra, Nani, Wilfried Zaha, Michael Carrick, Anderson, Robin van Persie, Ryan Giggs, Angelo Henriquez, Shinji Kagawa, Danny Welbeck, Bebe
