Record-breaker Nadal moves closer to Federer

Rafael Nadal moved up to No. 2 in the world rankings after winning an 18th Masters title in Madrid on Sunday.
After a record-breaking weekend, Nadal avenged his final defeat to Roger Federer at the Caja Magica last year with a 6-4 7-6(5) victory to overtake Andre Agassi's record of 17 ATP Masters titles and became the first man to win all three clay-court Masters titles in a single season.
The Spaniard overtakes Novak Djokovic to move up a place behind world No. 1 Federer, but he is still 3150 points behind the Swiss. Andy Murray remains fourth after his quarter-final appearance in Madrid.
Dinara Safina, who led the women's rankings this time last year, tumbled to ninth place after back-to-back defeats in Rome and Madrid. The Russian, who won both titles in Rome and Madrid last year, has struggled to rediscover her form after returning from a back injury. As in the men's rankings, a former world No. 1 moved up to second; Venus Williams overtaking Caroline Wozniacki after a final appearance in Madrid.
