Fifth seed Arantxa Parra Santonja reached the second round of the Swedish Open by edging out Wimbledon quarter-finalist Kaia Kanepi 6-4 7-5.

Although World No. 38 Kanepi is unseeded for the tournament, she is ranked 14 places above Parra Santonja following her shock run into the last eight at the All England Club.

Perhaps still feeling the pinch of fatigue following her efforts at Wimbledon, Kanepi struggled to put her opponent's serve under any pressure as she succumbed to defeat in Sweden.

Madrid Open winner Aravane Rezai joins Parra Santonja in the second round after requiring a mere 78 minutes to race past Lilia Osterloh.

The No. 2 seed, who stunned Venus Williams to triumph in the Spanish clay-court tournament in May, dropped just seven points on her first serve en route to an authoritative victory.

She was less successful when the pace was off the ball on her second delivery - winning less than half of the points there - but she was never in any serious danger, and now moves on to face Renata Voracova.

At the GDF Suez in Budapest the only seed in action was Shuai Peng, who stormed past World No. 988 Silvia Njiric 6-1 6-3. Elsewhere, Anna Chakvetadze recorded a triumph over Mariya Koryttseva.
