Top seed Flavia Pennetta needed just 47 minutes to book her place in the second round of the Swedish Open with a 6-2 6-0 victory over Swedish wildcard Anna Brazhnikova.

The world No. 12 was expected to meet compatriot Alberta Brianti in the next round, but instead she will face wildcard Sloane Stephens after the American teenager continued her impressive run of form to record an upset.

World No. 303 Stephens, who won the girls' doubles title at Wimbledon with Timea Babos on Sunday, broke Brianti on five occasions as she sealed a 6-2 6-4 victory.

Third seed Lucie Safarova, who watched in the stands as boyfriend Tomas Berdych lost his first Grand Slam final against Rafael Nadal on Sunday, progressed safely past German qualifier Kathrin Woerle 6-2 6-0.

However, sixth seed Angelique Kerber and No. 7 seed Sofia Arvidsson were both sent tumbling by Ana Vrljic and Anna-Lena Groenefeld respectively.

There were also victories for fourth seed Gisela Dulko, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and American Jill Craybas.

Meanwhile, at the GDF Suez Grand Prix in Budapest, top seed Alisa Kleybanova survived a tough test against Kazakhstan's Sesil Karatantcheva, while Roberta Vinci beat fellow Italian Tathiana Garbin 7-5 6-4.
