Venus Williams has written off the rest of the 2010 season with a knee injury.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion has announced she will not compete in the WTA Tour Championships at the end of October and has made herself unavailable for the Fed Cup final in November.

The world No. 3 withdrew from events in Cincinnati and Montreal in August with a sprained left kneecap, but returned in time for the US Open, where she fell to eventual champion Kim Clijsters in the semi-finals.

Despite assuring USA captain Mary-Joe Fernandez that she would play in the Fed Cup final against Italy in San Diego next month, Williams, who has not played in the Fed Cup since 2007, will not play again this year.

"I have been getting treatment and therapy on my knee and have been making progress, but unfortunately must continue to keep weight off my knee for the short term and won't be ready to return to competition in 2010," Williams said in a statement to the Associated Press.

"I am looking forward to returning to full health in time for the start of 2011 season and hopefully having the opportunity to play in both the Fed Cup and WTA Championships next year."
