Serena Williams has undergone emergency surgery after a blood clot was discovered on her lungs.

Her spokeswoman said that Williams had been treated for a haematoma on Monday, suffered as a result of a pulmonary embolism diagnosed last week.

"[On] Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a haematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation," Nicole Chabot said. "Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism which was discovered upon her return to LA."

Williams has not competed since winning Wimbledon in July, having twice undergone surgery for a foot problem caused when she stepped on broken glass.

"She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot," Chabot said. "Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications."
