Lleyton Hewitt has become the latest high-profile name to withdraw from the French Open.

The former world No. 1 could barely have left his withdrawal any later after he pulled out of Roland Garros on Sunday morning. Hewitt had been due on court just hours later.

An ankle problem has been cited for his decision to skip the tournament, although the Australian has a catalogue of injury concerns. Hewitt has not played on the ATP Tour since Match.

Frenchman Marc Gicquel is the beneficiary of Hewitt's withdrawal, and he will face Spain's Albert Montanes in the second match on Court Suzanne Lenglen on Sunday.

Hewitt joins Andy Roddick, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Tommy Robredo in missing Roland Garros, while the women's draw is shorn of Serena and Venus Williams.
