The shocks continued at the French Open, with No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki crashing out at the hands of an inspired Daniela Hantuchova.
Wozniacki came into the event being tipped to break her grand slam duck and the demise of Kim Clijsters the previous day only served to reinforce her position. However, it took just 73 minutes for her dream to be dashed as she was simply overwhelmed by Hantuchova.
At no stage did Wozniacki ever look in control of the match, as Hantuchova mixed her play up superbly. She attacked the net on occasions to put doubt into the mind of Wozniacki, but it was from the back of the court that the Slovakian won the contest.
Time and again she stepped inside the baseline and struck the ball cleanly and with great power. She broke on two occasions to race through the first set and it was a similar story in the second.
The one hope for Wozniacki was that Hantuchova would falter with the winning line in sight. She dropped her serve in controversial circumstances when 4-1 ahead, as with Wozniacki stretching to reach a drop shot the ball appeared to bounce twice. Hantuchova felt it had as she protested to the umpire, but the break was secured.
The setback could have knocked Hantuchova who has been brittle under pressure in the past but she regrouped to claim her place in the last 16 with a 6-1 6-3 win.

While those around her have been struggling, in Wozniacki and Kim Clijsters' cases departing, defending champion Francesca Schiavone had no such worries as she moved into the fourth round of the French Open with victory over Shuai Peng.
The Italian has looked much happier since hitting the clay and she was at her dominant best from the back of the court against Peng.
Schiavone was made to battle in the first set, as she trailed before running through five games on the spin. And she looked set to go through the gears in the second when Peng retired with the score 6-3 1-2 in the No. 5 seed's favour. The Chinese player called the doctor on to court and looked to be struggling with her breathing and retired in a flood of tears.
Schiavone will not be too thrilled to have secured victory in the manner in which she did, but progressing without wasting too much energy could prove crucial in the second week.
Sam Stosur was another big name to fall, with Gisela Dulko claiming a 6-4 1-6 6-3 victory. Australian No. 8 seed Stosur struggled early on in the blustery conditions, only to find her form from the back of the court in the second set.
Stosur secured an early break at the start of the final set when Dulko made a mess of a smash and netted a forehand to hand Stosur a 2-1 lead.
The Argentinian, though, refused to wilt and broke back immediately before racing into a 5-2 lead. Stosur held serve to force her opponent to serve out. The pressure was firmly on Dulko, but she found a run of first serves and secured victory when crunching a forehand down the line.
Third seed Vera Zvonareva is the highest ranked player remaining in the women's draw after the Russian beat Australia's Anastasia Rodionova in straight sets. Zvonareva will now meet compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who battled from a set down to beat Spanish qualifier Nuria Llagostera Vives 3-6 6-3 6-3.
Jelena Jankovic brought the run of Bethanie Mattek-Sands to an end with a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 win. The No. 10 seed has looked a much-improved player this season and she has made solid progress while a number of other major stars have struggled.
The 13th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova proved much too strong for Rebecca Marino, winning 6-0 6-4, while Marion Bartoli produced a superb display to claim a 3-6 6-2 6-4 win over the in-form Julia Goerges.
