Nico Rosberg says Mercedes has yet to see the best its rivals have to offer and played down his quick time from the final morning of testing.

Rosberg clocked a 1:20.130 on the last day of pre-season testing, bettering team-mate Lewis Hamilton's Saturday time by over 0.4s. The closest any of his rivals got on Sunday was Fernando Alonso's 1:20.494, but Rosberg is sure all the other big teams are capable of similar lap times on the right fuel levels.

"As we all know, you have to be very careful with the results of testing because you just don't know what other people are doing," he said. "We know for a fact that our competitors haven't showed their potential by far, we know that for sure.

"What I can say is that we have made progress and I'm pleased with the way the winter has gone. Everything has gone to plan and the reliability has been sorted out. But what also needs to be said is that Melbourne will see completely different conditions again as it will be hotter.

"We know for a fact last year that one of our big weaknesses was tyre degradation. We've learnt a lot about that, but how far are we [to solving the issue], we will have to wait and see. Pleased is probably the best word [to describe my feeling], but we'll see."

Rosberg thinks the team is working better this year and that it has recovered from its slump towards the end of last year.

"We had a very difficult end to year last year and dropped off a lot towards the end of the season and we are in a much better position now - definitely the communication and structure is working better," he said. "I'm pleased at the moment, we have a decent base with the car and reliability has been sorted and everything."
