McLaren's Kevin Magnussen set the pace on first day of testing at Silverstone as Formula One teams got this week's rather unusual Young Driver Test underway.

Magnussen is one of a trio of McLaren test drivers taking to the wheel of the MP4-28 this week as the team aims to concentrate on its car's performance and find an improvement ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. He was 0.172s faster than Paul di Resta in second, but neither of their times would have worried the top 17 on the grid at last month's British Grand Prix.

Di Resta, a fully-blooded F1 race driver, took over from James Calado at Force India midway through the day on the proviso that he only focused on a run plan provided by Pirelli. Under the regulations of the test, race drivers runs will be closely monitored by the FIA to make sure the teams stick strictly to tyre testing. Calado had set the fastest time of the morning with a 1:33.986, which stood as fourth fastest by the end of the day, 0.384s off Magnussen.

Red Bull's Antonio Felix da Costa was third fastest and just 0.047s shy of di Resta by the end of the day. He was offered the added bonus of an extra afternoon in the car after Red Bull decided to reshuffle its driver programme this week. Daniel Ricciardo was supposed to take part in his eagerly anticipated test at the wheel of the RB9 on Wednesday afternoon, but will now have to wait until Thursday afternoon to prove himself to the world champions. Mark Webber, meanwhile, has been dropped from the schedule following a clarification from the FIA over what race drivers would be allowed to test.

Daniel Juncadella was fifth fastest overall in the Williams, and after a slow start to the day clocked up 55 laps. Johnny Cecotto Jr was just 0.095s off the Williams as he had a day at the wheel of the Toro Rosso STR8. Robin Frijns was seventh fastest for Sauber ahead of Nicolas Prost in the Lotus and Davide Rigon in the Ferrari, who was 1.272s off the fastest pace.

Caterham's Alexander Rossi had an active morning and went on to complete 69 laps overall with a best time of 1:35.651, 2.049s off the pace. Tio Ellinas completed a morning at the wheel of the Marussia and clocked 36 laps in total before handing over to Max Chilton. Chilton's afternoon drive, which was to a Pirelli run plan due to his race driver status, was delayed due to an ECU issue and he only completed 27 laps by the end of the day. His best time was 4.745s off Magnussen's fastest and 1.671s off Ellinas' best.
