Bernie Ecclestone is pushing for a grand prix on the streets of New York by 2012.

In Bahrain Ecclestone said he was open to the return of an US Grand Prix and has long held ambitions of staging a race in New York. However, in Australia he said the likely venue for the race would be on the other side of the Hudson River in New Jersey.

"I'm trying for 2012, opposite Manhattan in New Jersey with skyscrapers in the background," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "Fifteen minutes from the centre of New York to the circuit. [It would be] a wonder."

The last F1 race in the US was held at Indianapolis in 2007, although in the past grands prix have been staged at nine different venues including the car park of Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.
