Eric Boullier admits Lotus is in negotiations with Pastor Maldonado about a potential seat at the team in 2014.

The decision about who will replace Kimi Raikkonen next year has yet to be made, with Boullier expecting to be able to retain Romain Grosjean for a third season. Asked by Sky Sports News if the team had spoken to Maldonado about the drive, Boullier confirmed he is a candidate.

"We had discussions with him, yes, it's true," Boullier said. "They are still going on."

However, speaking to the official Formula One website, Boullier said Nico Hulkenberg is his preferred choice.

Asked who is the next best thing to Raikkonen, Boullier replied: "Nico Hulkenberg ... I would love to [sign him]. This is the recommendation that I gave to my board."
