Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio has entered a team for the first season of the new FIA Formula E championship.

As part of a joint venture with Venturi Automobiles, DiCaprio is the co-founder of the new Venturi Grand Prix Formula E Team which completes the team line-up for Formula E's inaugural season.

"The future of our planet depends on our ability to embrace fuel-efficient, clean-energy vehicles," DiCaprio said. "Venturi Grand Prix has shown tremendous foresight in their decision to create an environmentally friendly racing team, and I am happy to be a part of this effort."

Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag says the inclusion of the likes of DiCaprio would help the new series be a success.

"I want to give a very special welcome to our Championship to Leonardo DiCaprio," Agag said. "Very few environmental leaders have helped more than him to spread the message of sustainability around the world. Having people like him and Richard Branson - global ambassadors for the environment - is a privilege for our Championship and will greatly help us to spread the use of electric cars in cities around the planet."

Venturi joins e-DAMS, Andretti Autosport, Dragon Racing, Super Aguri, Virgin Racing, China Racing, Audi Sport ABT, Drayson Racing and Mahindra Racing for the 2014/15 season.
