Vettel braced for difficult race
Sebastian Vettel is expecting the Mercedes-powered cars around him on the Canadian Grand Prix grid to have an advantage over him on Montreal's long straights in Sunday's race.
Vettel managed to qualify third on the grid, behind the two Mercedes and ahead of the two Mercedes-powered Williamses. However, he is hoping to steal a tow on the straights from the two in front, in the knowledge that his Renault-powered Red Bull is likely to be outgunned on the straights.
"It's a long race here and strategy could be a bit of a surprise, so we have to wait and see what happens," he said. "Williams is very strong here and they have a quick car down the straights. Generally I think the Mercedes-powered cars are looking forward to the straights tomorrow, but I will try to keep as close as I can to those two [Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton] and get some tow and do the best I can. If we have a chance to attack them, we will go for it."
Vettel said he found most of his lap time in qualifying in the chicanes in the second sector of the lap.
"The start of the last lap wasn't great and I still didn't manage to get the start of the lap right. The first two corners I didn't get along very well with today, but after that I tried to take more risk and it worked. Sector two was very good with the two chicanes, especially the second one I found a significantly better line and more time. Then I just kept it together until the end. Obviously a very good result and the maximum we could do, with it very close to the people behind. Four cars were within 0.05s and I'm happy to be the quickest of those."
