Pirelli has unveiled its low-profile concept tyres in the Silverstone pit lane, wheeling them out fitted to the Lotus E22.

The new tyres will run on the Lotus at Wednesday's test with Charles Pic at the wheel, but are primarily for demonstration purposes and are not likely to feature in a race before 2017 at the earliest. They are fitted to 18-inch rims rather than the usual 13-inch and Pirelli said it would wait on Formula One's reaction before developing them further.

"It's not in the regulations, it's not going to happen for two or three years, so it's part of enabling people to understand what it would do for the look of the car," Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery said. "We will have to make some minor changes to the car to enable us to do it, but we thought it would be a worthwhile exercise, because everybody has talked about it but it's not something anyone has seen."

However, if Pirelli is to develop the concept further, it is keen to manufacture 19- or 20-inch tyres in order to differentiate F1 from Formula E and other racing series running low-profile tyres.
