Pic takes spoils in opening round of GP2
Arden's Charles Pic is at the top of the GP2 drivers' standings after coming out on top at the first round of the European season at the Spanish Grand Prix.
It was an eventful opening weekend, with the Feature race - won by Pic - providing some of the best action of the weekend, while Sunday's Sprint race was a more predictable affair.
In the feature, Sergio Perez led in the early stages after an accident in the first corner accounted for pre-race favourite Jules Bianchi. But Perez's charge was cut short when a slow mandatory pit stop dropped down the order and handed the lead to Pic. From then on, Pic, who started sixth on the grid, kept his cool and did well to hold the position from Giacomo Ricci and Dani Clos behind him.
Briton Sam Bird provided the entertainment, fighting through the field after narrowly avoiding his ART team-mate Bianchi's accident at the start. He just missed out on the crucial eighth position that would have seen him take pole in the Sprint race.
Instead the coveted No. 1 spot on Sunday's grid went to Fabio Leimer. The GP2 rookie coped with the pressure of the occasion well and went on to take a lights-to-flag victory for Ocean - just the second race win in the team's history.
Leimer held off Virgin test driver Luiz Razia for the entire race and the pair crossed the line with just 0.7 seconds separating them. Again it was Sam Bird who impressed most, as he passed five cars on his way to fourth place and a very hard-earned three championship points.
The teams will reconvene in Monaco in a week's time for one of the most exciting races of the season.
