Former Formula One driver Andrea de Cesaris has died in a motorcycle accident in Italy.
According to Italian press reports he was killed instantly in a road accident in Rome.
De Cesaris was a veteran of 214 grands prix after a career spanning 15 years in the sport, although never won a race. In his early career he was a world karting champion, finished second to Chico Serra in the 1979 British Formula Three series and placed fifth for Ron Dennis' Project Four Formula Two team.
By the end of 1980 de Cesaris had made his Formula One debut with Alfa Romeo and in 1981 drove for McLaren. It was a tricky season in which he earned a reputation for crashing, which he never really managed to shake off.
He came third at Monaco in 1982 driving for Alfa Romeo but he could have won. Lying second going on to the final lap behind Didier Pironi, he was gifted the lead when the Ferrari's electrics failed but, cruelly, de Cesaris had run out of fuel.
De Cesaris led again, at Spa in 1983, but his engine blew and went on to score two second places for Alfa Romeo that year. A move to Ligier for two seasons produced little, so then he went to Minardi, then Brabham, then Rial, then Dallara, then Jordan, then Tyrrell, Jordan again and finally to Sauber before his Formula One career ended in 1994 as the second-most-experienced driver ever, behind Riccardo Patrese.
