Red Bull junior Lynn claims GP3 crown
British driver Alex Lynn secured the 2014 GP3 Series championship after title rival Dean Stoneman failed to take pole position at Abu Dhabi.
Red Bull junior Lynn came into Abu Dhabi with a lead of 47 points, meaning Stoneman needed a perfect weekend - four points from pole position and two race victories - to stand a chance. But Stoneman finished four tenths off Marvin Kirchhöfer in the Friday afternoon qualifying session, meaning Lynn wrapped up the title before the first race.
Lynn, who led the championship from the very first race of the series, is believed to be in contention for a Toro Rosso seat next season, with the team yet to decide on who will replaces Daniil Kvyat as Max Verstappen's team-mate in 2015. Incumbent Jean-Eric Vergne is confident he will retain the seat, but Formula Renault 3.5 champion Carlos Sainz Jr is also a Red Bull junior driver in with a chance of landing the seat.
