F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award, with Mercedes and Daniel Ricciardo also up for accolades.

Hamilton secured his second drivers' crown last year and has been nominated for Laureus' main prize along with Moto GP's Marc Marquez, who has won back-to-back world championships in his first two seasons in the sport. Also nominated are tennis star Novak Djokovic, Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, golf's Rory McIlroy and French athlete Renaud Lavillenie.

Mercedes has been nominated in the World Team of the Year award after its dominant season, which saw it win a record 16 races. It will go up against Europe's golfing Ryder Cup team, the Germany side which won the football World Cup, Real Madrid, NBA's San Antonio Spurs and the Swiss Davis Cup tennis team.

Meanwhile Ricciardo has been recognised in the Breakthrough of the Year category after he won three races in his first season at Red Bull. It was a feat all the more impressive as it came alongside four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, who claimed Laureus' top prize last year.

Before Vettel claimed the award for his record-breaking season in 2013, only Michael Schumacher (2002 and 2004) had been awarded the top prize from the world of F1. Brawn GP was the last F1 outfit to win the team award for its fairy-tale championship season in 2009. Jenson Button won the Breakthrough of the Year award for the same season.
