Jolyon Palmer recorded his fourth victory of the season in the opening race in the Algarve, leading from the start to secure victory by almost three seconds from Benjamin Bailly. Britain's Jack Clarke took his maiden F2 podium in third.

"This was the best result possible for the championship," Palmer said. "I've got a solid lead now, this is the halfway stage and now it's definitely going to be looking for the championship, just make sure I get solid results and keep on this form."

The drama of the day came when Philipp Eng and Dean Stoneman collided at a hairpin; Eng was able to recover to take sixth but Stoneman never regained momentum. The pair then remarkably clashed again on the slow-down lap, and all that came after they hit each other at Monza in May.

Natalia Kowalska came close to securing her first points in F2 after recovering from an early collision with Mihai Marinescu.

Will Bratt, who looked good in qualifying, never got going as his car was stuck in the pits and he was reduced to a late start. By then setting the fastest lap, his frustration would be been even greater.
