What happened on January 31 in Formula One history?
1996
The FIA announced it was trialing aviation-style black boxes in cars, one of a number of measures resulting from the death of Ayrton Senna in 1994. "Before that we thought there was nothing wrong with our safety, but then it went the other way and Formula One was portrayed as a blood sport," FIA boss Max Mosley explained.
1966
JJ Lehto was born in Espoo, Finland. He competed in 70 grand prix, between 1989 and 1994, with his best result a third in the 1991 in San Marino race. After a successful career in sports cars he made the move to TV commentary, but still occasionally competed in local rallies.
1930
Jo Bonnier was born in Stockholm. Despite 108 F1 starts he only managed one win, at the Netherlands Grand Prix in 1959. He was killed in an accident during the 1972 Le Mans when his Lola crashed into a Ferrari and catapulted over the barrier into the trees.
1934
Ernesto Brambilla was born in Monza Italy. He entered two Italian Grand Prix - in 1963 he failed to qualify, and in 1969 he failed to make the start. He later ran a workshop in Monza with his brother Vittario, who also competed in F1.
1954
Mauro Baldi was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He competed in 41 grand prix between 1982 and 1985, but eventually found more success in sports cars.
1908
Bill Cantrell was born in Kentucky. Although he was better known as a speed boat racer he also competed in the Indianapolis Grand Prix, sharing a drive with Bayliss Levrett in 1950.
