More safety car tweaks by FIA
The FIA has made a further tweak to the safety car rules ahead of the British Grand Prix.
On top of changes made earlier this week and tested during Friday's practice sessions, the deployment of the safety car will now be strategically timed to prevent a repeat of the Valencia situation that angered Ferrari. The pace car will now be released in order to come out in front of the leader and not split up the pack as it did at the European Grand Prix.
"An assessment will then be made to determine when the safety car should join the track in order to try and ensure that no drivers will be unnecessarily disadvantaged," read an FIA statement. "In all cases we will attempt to pick up the leader, however, if this proves unfeasible for any reason, cars between the safety car and the leader will be waved through immediately."
In order to allow cars to rejoin the circuit during a pit stop when the safety car is out, the FIA also confirmed that the pit exit lights will switch between red and green depending on whether there is a gap in the traffic. This change is aimed at preventing the situation Michael Schumacher found himself in at Valencia, when he had to rejoin at the back of the pack despite there being gaps in the order for him to slot into.
