Philipp Eng won at Brands Hatch for the second successive year to claim his third victory of the season as title rivals Jolyon Palmer and Dean Stoneman clashed in their battle for fourth.
Starting from second on the grid, Eng lost touch with pole-sitter Kazim Vasiliauskas in the early stages, falling four seconds adrift after eight laps. Behind the lead duo, Jolyon Palmer jumped from fifth to fourth, with Dean Stoneman moving up from seventh on the grid into fifth.
The race's main talking point came on lap four, however, when Stoneman tried to dive down the inside of Palmer at Paddock Hill only to lose momentarily lose the front of the car, running wide and missing the apex in the process. Palmer, on the outside, had nowhere to go and was forced into the gravel and out of the race.
It allowed Tom Gladdis to slip by Stoneman and into third, which became second shortly afterwards as Vasiliauskas retired with gearbox problems soon after.
The top three remained separated by less than 1.5 seconds for the remainder of the race but neither Gladdis nor Stoneman threatened to make any further moves.
Will Bratt, Nicola de Marco and Sergei Afanasiev rounded off the top six placings with Stoneman's third place moving him into the championship lead.
