Felipe Massa has made clear he is not prepared to play second fiddle to Fernando Alonso at Ferrari beyond the end of the season.
Massa recently admitted that his championship chances are over and Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo wants to see "a strong Massa who will shave points off the rivals," and therefore help Alonso. But Massa insists he will be ready to fight for the title again next year, once he has solved his current problem with the tyres.
"For sure I am not Ferrari's second Rubens Barrichello," he told Sport Bild magazine. "If that happens, I will stop driving. I'm not going to go racing to be eligible for second place.
"Fernando is very good, definitely. But he is not better than my other team-mates. It's just myself not being as good as usual. I have had big problems with the tyres. For my driving style, even the soft tyres are too hard. And I'm sure many other drivers have had the same problem. I don't think Michael has forgotten how to drive."
He admitted his role at the team for the remaining four races was clear.
"If I am in front of the other drivers, but behind Fernando so that I can take away points from his rivals, that is of course positive for Fernando," he said. "That's what I'll try to do."
