Plans for Formula One to return to South Africa are underway, according to a report from German news agency SID.

The country has not hosted a grand prix since 1993, where the famous Kyalami circuit north of Johannesburg was the venue. But the report said that plans to construct a new grand prix circuit in Cape Town were being discussed by governmental economic and tourism authorities.

After South Africa successfully hosting the football World Cup in July, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said that the chances of a grand prix there were 'ok'.

"We have been talking to the people in South Africa for quite a long time off and on. The chances are ok," said Ecclestone.

The already crowded Formula One calendar will have the addition of the Indian Grand Prix in 2011 with the Russian and US GPs next in the pipeline.
