Jenson Button is confident McLaren can take the fight to Red Bull at Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix after a closely fought qualifying session.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel took pole position with a brilliant lap at the last minute while Button had to settle for fourth behind team-mate Lewis Hamilton in second and Mark Webber in third.

"I don't know what's going to happen with the weather," he added. "It's held off for two days so if it's a nice dry race I think we'll hopefully be able to play around with the Red Bulls a bit. Lewis's start and my start in Melbourne were not great and that got me a bit stuck into turn one. I'm hoping that our starts will be a bit better and we can have a nice run down to turn one, I know that we've got a very good KERS so that should help us quite a bit."

Having set the fastest time in Q2, Button admitted he compromised the end of his Q3 lap by pushing his tyres a little bit too hard in the first two sectors.

"I just wish Q2 was Q3 but it isn't," he said. "Q3 I had a bit more oversteer but that's the direction that I took. The balance was pretty good but I just hurt the tyres a little bit too much for the last sector. So I'm down in P4, but it looks like it's going to be a fun scrap tomorrow because we are going to be a lot closer to the Red Bulls than people expected and it seems to be quite a big gap behind us."
