Jenson Button has come second in a sportsman of the year poll voted for by European journalists.

The European Sports Press Union voted Roger Federer as the winner of the annual award, the Swiss tennis player scoring 135 points to Button's 85. The award is voted for by journalists from a number of European news agencies and has been won by Michael Schumacher on four occasions in the past.

It is the second end-of-year award Button has missed out on since winning his 2009 title with Brawn. He also came second in the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award earlier this month. He will, however, be on the Queen's New Year's honours list for an MBE.
