Former Benetton driver JJ Lehto has been jailed following a boating accident which saw one of his friends killed.

Lehto was sentenced to two years and four months in prison after it was found that he was driving the boat at the time when it hit a bridge pillar in June 2010. Lehto suffered head injuries in the crash, which happened in Raasepori on Finland's south coast. The court found that the boat had been travelling at nearly 80km/h in an area where the speed limit was 5km/h, and that Lehto was drunk at the time.

The 45-year-old drove for Onyx, Dallara, Sauber and Benetton during a six-year Formula One career during which he scored a solitary podium finish. After being more successful in sports cars and winning Le Mans twice, most recently he had been working as an F1 commentator for MTV3.
