Michael Schumacher set the fastest time on the second day of the first test in Jerez as Mark Webber led the way for the 2012 cars.

Schumacher's morning time of 1:18.561 went unbeaten as Mercedes continued using its W02 to analyse the new Pirelli tyres. His time came during a short run on soft tyres, and saw Schumacher displace Webber at the top of the timesheets. Red Bull had enjoyed a more productive morning than Tuesday, with Webber gradually lowing his best time to a 1:19.184 before concentrating on longer runs in the afternoon.

Daniel Ricciardo recovered from his early finish on day one to set the third fastest time as Toro Rosso looked to make up for yesterday's lost hour. He was able to complete 100 laps with a best time of 1:19.587. Jules Bianchi was fourth with a 1:20.221 after spending the morning in the Force India before handing over to Paul di Resta whose 1:20.272 put him sixth behind Kimi Raikkonen.

It was Raikkonen who caused the first of two red flags on Wednesday when he ran wide on an early run, scattering gravel across the circuit. The second red flag was due to oil on the circuit, but in a show of impressive reliability by all the teams no cars stopped on track during the day.

Seventh was Felipe Massa in the F2012, with Ferrari one of only three teams to go quicker in the afternoon. Massa's time of 1:20.454 was nearly two and a half seconds faster than his time on Tuesday, putting him just ahead of Jenson Button's McLaren.

Sergio Perez had a solid first day in the Sauber, setting a time over half a second quicker than Kamui Kobayashi had yesterday, but only completing 68 laps as a fuel system problem reduced his running after lunch. Perez also improved his best lap in the afternoon, but will aim for more track time on Thursday before handing back to Kobayashi.

It was Heikki Kovalainen who had the most productive day, with Caterham making up for lost time by completing 139 laps; just over twice the race distance from the last race held at Jerez - the 1997 European Grand Prix. Kovalainen's best time of 1:21.518 put him little over 0.3s behind Pastor Maldonado's Williams as Caterham ran KERS for the first time.

Pedro de la Rosa concluded HRT's running for the week with the slowest time as the team will now return to base in order to prepare the new car for the second test in Barcelona.
