Robert Kubica's participation in the famous Monte Carlo Rally ended minutes after it started.
He was 4km into Tuesday's opening-night prologue when the engine on his Renault Clio R3 failed. Efforts to repair it within the regulations in time for the start of Wednesday's first special stage proved in vain and he was forced to quit.
Minutes before the start he said finishing the rally presented one of the "biggest challenges of my life".
Kubica's run in the season-opener comes ahead of former Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen switching to rallying this year with the Citroen Junior Team in the World Rally Championship.
