Adrian Newey has admitted that Red Bull is "trying to catch up again" with the work on its RB9 after such a close 2012 season.

Sebastian Vettel took the drivers' championship at the final race of the season in Brazil after a tight battle with Fernando Alonso, and Red Bull was working hard to develop its car right up to the end of the season. Having continued to update the RB8 until the United States Grand Prix a week before the championship finale, Newey admitted that work on the new car was more difficult as a result.

"We were introducing developments to the car right up to the penultimate race," Newey told Autosport. "That has made it difficult to introduce all of those and simultaneously develop the next car."

Newey said that while it was ultimately the right decision to focus on winning the 2012 title, he's now facing a race against time to get the RB9 ready for pre-season testing.

"If I'm honest, this has compromised the timescales of the new car more than we would have liked. It was the right trade at the time because we managed to get the job done but it means a busy winter trying to catch up again."
