Team principal Stefano Domenicali is keen to get to the bottom of Ferrari's lack of performance at the British Grand Prix before the cars hit the track again on Friday in Germany.

Fernando Alonso finished third at Silverstone but only after a gritty drive back through the field and problems for other cars including his championship rival Sebastian Vettel, who suffered a gearbox problem that forced him to retire. On Saturday Alonso could qualify no higher than tenth and team principal Stefano Domenicali is keen to get to the root of the problem ahead of this weekend's German Grand Prix.

"The British Grand Prix in terms of performance was not very good," he said. "We need to understand in these two or three days at home why, because there is something that is bigger than the little details that caused us not to be better at Silverstone in terms of pace, qualifying and everything. This is the most important thing we have to work on, understanding where to recover the performance."

Domenicali said the one positive to come out of the race in Britain was that Alonso closed the gap to Vettel.

"Today was very good for us in terms of driver classification because [Alonso took] 15 points. This is the objective we have to have ahead of the summer break, to close the gap [to Vettel] as much as possible."
