Bernie Ecclestone believes Fernando Alonso let his standards slip this season as he looked to switch teams from Ferrari.

Alonso was linked to both Red Bull and McLaren this year and had a public spat with Ferrari when results dropped off midway through the season. Ecclestone believes he also let his own performance tail away, which he sees as proof he was looking for a way out.

"I've been a little disappointed in Fernando, because I'm a big supporter of him and Ferrari," Ecclestone wrote in the foreword of the official Formula One season review. "I thought he gave up a little bit, which is proof he was looking for another team."

Ecclestone said he was not sure whether Alonso or Ferrari was to blame, even though Alonso still finished second to the dominant Sebastian Vettel.

"I don't know whether the team is not competitive because of him or because the people running the team aren't getting the job done," he said. "He certainly deserves a car that's capable of winning races. Whether that Ferrari is or not, I don't know."
