Fernando Alonso set the fastest time on the second day of testing at Valencia, but admitted pre-season tests were not the place to make any call on where the Ferrari stood against rivals.

"It's difficult to feel the competitiveness of the car, because in the past there were lower fuel loads, so it was easier to compare, with the tyres," he told reporters. "Now also you have no focus - normally your team-mate was with you [at the tests]."

But that notwithstanding, he said he was pleased to get more time in behind the wheel. "It was a good start for us … we did more than 100 laps, which was the priority - to do a lot of kilometres."

Having pipped Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull to the quickest time of the morning session, Alonso picked up the pace even further in the afternoon to finish with a quickest time of 1:13.307 to again beat Vettel in the timesheets.

"The moveable rear wing has been a new device for us so we are making use of the system. It's not so easy to activate and de-activate before the corner, so there is some time in practice before we get used to it. And the same with the KERS.

"The extra buttons on the steering wheel require some time. I had some time in the simulator and now this time today, so I can say I am quite happy with everything in the steering wheel.

"It's been a very productive day."
