Fernando Alonso says it is still too early to say whether his friend Robert Kubica will be able to return to Formula One racing in the future.

Kubica has been out of the sport since sustaining serious injuries in a rallying accident in 2011. He has been undergoing rehabilitation and underwent further surgery on his elbow in June to help him better handle a steering wheel should he return.

There was speculation that Kubica would drive for Ferrari at some point in his career had he not suffered his injuries, but Alonso told F1 Racing Magazine there was still no way of knowing if his friend would return.

"It's very hard to say whether Robert will return to 100% fitness and be able to race again in Formula One," he said.

"Now and again we speak and I know how much it hurts him to be so far away from what has always been his world. He has to keep calm and think first and foremost about recovering total functionality of his body, then he can think again about racing."
