Fernando Alonso has urged his Ferrari team to look "for some limits, some holes" to deliver performance to its 2013 car.

Ferrari started the 2012 season well off the pace and was unable to close the gap to front-runners Red Bull and McLaren. Alonso said that Ferrari did not push the regulations to the limit in some areas compared to its rivals and says it is an approach that will need to change next season to have a more competitive car.

"There were several incidents in which the other teams were at the limit, but not us," Alonso is quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport. "But this has always happened and always will. However, we too have to think within the confines of the rules while looking for some limits, some holes, like the other teams do in order to improve our performances."

Asked again about the yellow flag controversy following the Brazilian Grand Prix, Alonso was keen to stress that Sebastian Vettel deserves to be champion.

"The decision to ask for an explanation on the yellow flag was almost mandatory out of respect for all the Ferrari fans who wanted clarification on the situation. FIA said that, at that moment, the green flag was out, so everything is relaxed. It was the right decision and the case is closed. Vettel is the rightful champion as he earned more points than anyone. It's plain for everyone to see."
