F1 chiefs meet for rules revolution summit
F1 chiefs are set for a revolutionary meeting in Paris on Thursday which could radically overhaul the sport for future seasons.
The F1 Strategy Group - this year comprised of Mercedes, Red Bull, Williams, Ferrari, McLaren and Force india - will meet commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone and FIA president Jean Todt to discuss radical changes to the make-up of the sport. Up for discussion are changes to power unit regulations from next year onwards following a push for 1000bhp engines.
Last month Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene said F1 needed a "real revolution…with significant and radical changes". It comes amidst dwindling grand prix and TV audiences and the concern fans are being put off the sport as it has become more focused on technology than driver skill.
Also on the agenda are discussions surrounding simplified aerodynamics and wider rear tyres. Following the news Manor - formerly Marussia - is close to a shock comeback before the Melbourne opener in March the size of the grid will also be up for discussion.
It has been suggested top teams will lean in favour of voting against the minnows' return to the grid due to concerns over safety but also finances, as it could prematurely end discussions of financial redistribution - as explained by The Inside Line.
Any changes would need to be ratified by the F1 Commission, with March 1 the latest date the sporting and technical regulations can be changed without unanimous agreement.
